When you come back from a vacation/conference, Tuesday still feels like it's Monday. Having missed this week's Book-Bloger-Hop question due to that, I figured I should try participating in another weekly meme. And for that meme, we have the
Top Ten Characters I Hate
My grandpa once told me that "hate" was a very strong word, not to be used lightly. But since there's no definition of "hate" for this , some of these are characters I love to hate, or are characters I think are well written but are so odious that you have to dislike them. And with that, in no particular order....
1. Bella - Twilight Series: Oh let me count the ways.....no, on second thought let's not, since that will take far too long.
2. Claudius - Hamlet: A villain I love to hate. Kill the husband to marry the wife to be crowned king. There just seems to be little good in him, though he's fun to read. Had I remembered Othello better, I probably could say the same for Iago.
3. Edward - Twilight Series: There's just not much to like to begin with. Had he not been 100+ and still acted like he was a love sick teenager, he may have had some redemption. Some people can pull that off (see generally, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), but Edward is no Spike or Angel.
4. Christopher McCandless - Into The Wild: Yes, this is a real person in life, but the characterization of him in the book and the movie totally rubbed me the wrong way.
5. Dolores Umbridge - Harry Potter Series: How do you not dislike this character. She's written as evil wrapped in sacrine and was wonderfully portrayed in the filmed version.
6. Richard III - Richard III: He's clearly the villain and seems near-evil at times, but still...how can you not love to hate him.
7. Kenji - In the Miso Soup: Utterly annoying protagonist.
8. Kinpatsu Sakamochi - Battle Royale: Since I haven't reviewed the book yet, I don't want to give much away, but I disliked the evil-seeming character
9. Essentially the entire cast of On the Road: Maybe it's just me, but I don't get what was supposed to be so great about this story and I struggled to find any liking for any of the characters.
10. Johnnie Walker - Kafka on the Shore: I can't say much about why I hate this character without giving away the plot. Suffice it to say, if you know me in real life, there's one part of the book that made me hate this character so much.

I agree, you HAVE to hate Umbridge. Bella almost made my list, especially the way Meyer wrote her in New Moon.
Definitely agree on Umbridge!
Yes to all the characters in On the Road. I couldn't even finish the book.
Tahleen: On the Road is one of my good friend's favorite books. Had I not been reading it to talk to my friend about it, I may not have finished it either.
Yes to Bella, Edward, and Umbridge. Those are popular choices for this week, lol, easy to see why.
100% with you on Sakamochi, too. Sadistic, crazy bastard. At least the movie version of his character got some backstory, this guy was just...yuck. Worse in the manga though :/ I almost included Kiriyama or Mitsuko Souma in my list but Battle Royale was a while back. Hated Mitsuko though :/

I'm not at all surprised that Bella and Edward are popular choice on this meme.
I saw the film (eh..) and read the first book of the Manga (didn't like) of Battle Royale. I thought it was odd how they changed the back-story of the Game in the film...
Kiriyama and Mitsuko were two of my favorite characters in that book. I actually really liked Mitsuko, despite her being pretty obviously crazy.
Hm. I can see that. Mitsuko was really just...gross in the manga, so that's mostly why I can't stand her. Kiriyama killed Shinji and Sugimura, which is unforgivable, lol, although I admit reading from his POV was pretty interesting.
I'm with you on Bella! I have to disagree with you about On the Road haha. It's one of my favorite books but I guess I could see how people can hate the characters!
UGH. Richard III and Claudius both. Yuck.
Umbridge is awful! I don't love Bella and Edward but I don't think their the most dislikeable either. Otherwise, I'm unfamiliar with a lot of characters on your list. So, I'm a bit stumped in my comment. Guess, I have some more reading to do. :)
My husband is a park ranger in a very remote, outback Australian national park.
We watched the film version of Into the Wild and he too found Christopher McCandless an irresponsible, selfish and moronic character - even though he was a real person.
I didn't like the characters in On The Road all that much - I didn't get the whole acid jazz/beat scene. I liked Dharma Bums much better.
Haha, two Twilight characters :P. I really hated that Johnny Walker too, and that Dolores Umbridge. Perhaps I should start looking at the characters I hate to make a list of my own :P.
