Top Ten Tuesday - Book to Film

Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is

- Top Ten Books You'd Like to See Turned Into Movies -

This is going to be a short list since I've been so busy recently; however, I was able to think up 10!  Go me!

1. Prep - Curtis Sittenfeld:  I have yet to review it, but this is one of my favorite books.  The problem being that, like probably a few other books on here, is nearly unfilmable since so much of what I like is specifically about what the narrator is feeling.

2. Battle Royale Koushun Takami: This is a slight cheat as there already is a filmed version (and sequel) to this book, but it was terribly horibadly done.  It changed way too many things and, honestly, this is one book that is almost unfilmable.  The book makes you care about even the minor characters while the film (and really any film version) would need to be excessively long to accomplish.  But still, I'd love to see a well done version of it.

3. The Hunger Games - Susan Collins:  It was cute, and they are making a filmed version, but still it goes on the list. Though between the similar stories, I think I prefer Battle Royale.

4. Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World - Haruki Murakmi: Like most of Murakami's work, this would be a bit difficult to film, but probably could be done.  It may be the easiest of his major works (apart from Norwegian Wood) to film from what I remember of the storyline.

5. Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakmi: One of m favorite novels, it has been filmed but I haven't seen it yet.  :(  I don't think it's out yet in the US.

6. Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict & Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict - Laurie Viera Ringe:  They'd almost have to be done as one film, but I think it could be done and done well.
 7. Piercing - Ryu Murakami: Again, almost unfilmable, but this was a great suspense story.

8. Priority - Iselin C. Hermann: If you read this, you will know it is possibly unfilmable, but I'd love to see someone try to do it well.

9. Undress Me In the Temple of Heaven - Susan Jane Gilman:  This was a great, memoir that I always thought read more like a spy story than anything else.

10. The Historian - Elizabeth Kostov:  This is almost too long for just a 2 hour movie.

I didn't know they'd made a film of Norwegian Wood.I loved the book but I don't know how cinematic it would be.

I'd like to read Norwegian Wood before I see the film but am interested to see how Murakami translates...I'm not sure if it will be successful (could still be a good film in its own right though).

The film was released in Japan back in December 2010, but I haven't seen a release date for the US yet. The film released in the UK back in March 2011.

IMDB currently has a 6.8 rating for it.

Good call on Prep. I didn't even think of that one, but it would make a good movie.

@ Brenna I heard somewhere that MTV had bought the rights to it, but hadn't done anything with it. I think they were thinking of making it a tv show.

I'd love to see Prep as a film. When I read it I kept imagining Jenna Malone (Donnie Darko, Saved!) as the main character and I never do that with novels I read.

Yes, I think that the Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict would make a good film and I agree that the two books would work best if part of the same film. Good call.

You're right about The Historian. They'd have to do some serious editing to bring it under 2 hours. I loved Susan Jane Gilman's Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress but I have yet to read Temple of Heaven. I hope it's as good . . .
