Bookish News: Borders Bankruptcy and Closings

The book world has been hearing rumblings of it for a few years now, but today Borders filed for bankruptcy protection.  My understanding is that the company had already closed their English branches a few years back.

The Borders that I frequently go to is scheduled to be closed, which really bothers me.  Yes, it means in all probability there will be sales with massive deals, however, Borders is sadly the only bookstores still in my county, since our Barnes & Nobles closed after a landlord dispute at the end of 2010.  This leaves me with no bookstore within a reasonable distance to visit regularly, if only to browse.

We will have another store still opened, but it's pretty much out of my way and in a part of the county I never go to unless I'm literally driving past it on my way into Chicago.

For a list of the store closings, The Wall Street Journal has a searchable list located here.

Sorry to hear there won't be any bookstores in your area. Of course there is always ordering online, but that really isn't the same as going into a bookstore.

Yeah. I agree Brenna. You'd be surprised how many times I'll find new books to read just walking around a book store.

My hope is that another bookstore moves into that space soon.
